This raspy voiced crooner has seen tragedy and triumph. Now, on his third album he proclaims to all, "I'm here!", without having to say a word.

The gruff-voiced singer/songwriter continues to grow on his third album, which in many ways deals with growing up and growing wiser. Jennings, who drops the between-song narrations of previous albums, talks a great deal about finding and maintaining mature relationships and taking responsibility for your actions. With a few exceptions, Jennings avoids clichés in a genre that’s full of them. That is a change for the better. — Jones

MORE URBAN VIBES: Hip-hop and soul styles also mix well in the third set from singer/songwriter producer Lyfe Jennings, "Lyfe Change" (Columbia, B+). On songs like "Keep on Dreaming" (lifting a tune fragment from Suzanne Vega's "Tom's Diner") and the Peter Pan-invoking "Never Never Land," this Toledo, Ohio, native issues balmy Lyfe lessons that even a Bob Marley could endorse. Elsewhere, the album's "Brand New" borrows extensively from the Gamble-Huff hit "You Make Me Feel Brand New" and also quotes the reggae hit "I Can See Clearly Now."

The pen is mightier with soulful chords...He doesn’t kick it in the club with Paris Hilton. He doesn’t dance across the stage like Chris Brown. Lyfe Jennings doesn’t do a lot of the stuff many so-called R&B acts do today. Thankfully, he does do what Sam Cooke, Al Green and Lionel Richie did so well in their day—he sings his damn heart out!
